Gutter Guards, Screens & Solid Covers

Copper K-style gutter with a copper gutter screen and autumn leaves
Leaf Protection for Your Gutter System

Choose a Guard That Fits the Gutter and Roof Detail

Gutter guards cover the gutter opening to help prevent leaves and debris from getting inside, keeping your gutters flowing and draining smoothly. The right choice depends on more than gutter size: the front bead, gutter installation height, available mounting points and local debris conditions all affect how a guard fits and performs.

K&M Sheet Metal provides premium fascia-mount gutter screens, under-roof gutter screens, and solid gutter covers for K-style, reverse-bead half-round, Euro-bead half-round, and compatible box gutters, available in materials and colors to perfectly match your existing gutters. Custom dimensions can also be considered for unique profiles.

Take a look at the designs below, view the product drawings and their detail pages. We suggest ordering a free sample first to make sure the guard you want will work with your system before making a big purchase. You can pick up free samples at our Durham, NC warehouse or have them shipped for an added cost.

Three Designs for Different Installation Details

Fascia Mount Gutter Screen

K&M's Leaf Gutter Screen combines the strength of a solid gutter helmet® or hood with the ability to efficiently capture water during heavy rain, thanks to its offset hole design and stainless steel micro mesh. It features a vertical leg at the back that can be securely attached to the fascia.

Under-Roof Gutter Screens

This premium gutter screen offers the same quality design as our fascia mount version, but with the rear section of the screen designed to extend beneath the roof covering. It’s an ideal option for existing gutters installed too high for a fascia mount screen to work effectively.

Solid Gutter Covers

For maximum leaf protection, our solid gutter cover completely shields the top of the gutter and uses surface tension to guide water around the cover’s edge into the gutter. Proper placement and a clear path for water entry are essential.

Fascia Mount Screens with Solid Metal Backing

K&M’s screen combines stainless steel mesh with a formed metal support and an offset opening pattern. The mesh provides the debris barrier while the backing supports it across the gutter.

Our gutter screen features a high-quality stainless steel micro mesh that lets water flow through easily while keeping leaves and debris out.

The standard screen is suited to fascia-mounted arrangements, when the back of the screen cannot be supported by gutter hangers. Check the product detail rather than assuming the same attachment works with every hanger.

Under-roof gutter screen examples showing the screen profile

Under-Roof Screens for Suitable Roof Edges

The under-roof version uses the screened construction with a rear extension intended to fit on top of the roof edge metal and under the roof covering. Applications can include shingles, tile and slate, but suitability depends on the actual roof assembly and access under the roofing material installed.

Have the installer review the roofing, flashing and gutter position before selecting this option. Do not assume roofing can simply be lifted without affecting or damaging the roof detail. A sample and a side-view photograph can help establish the fit before ordering a full run.

Solid Covers and the Water-Entry Edge

A solid cover has a different water-entry method from a mesh screen. Water is intended to follow the formed edge into the gutter while leaves and larger debris passes over it. Roof runoff, installation position and surface condition influence that behavior.

Review the solid-cover drawing and installation instructions for your roof pitch and eave arrangement. Leaves or other material collecting on the cover or at the entry edge can disrupt the intended flow and cause water to flow over the gutter.

Simplify your installation by adding solid gutter cover end caps. These cap off the cover ends and differ from the end caps that seal the gutter trough, so be sure to include the right pieces when planning your setup.

Gutter Profile Matters as Much as Nominal Size

K-style, reverse-bead half-round and Euro-bead half-round gutters do not share the same opening and front-lip geometry. Two gutters sold under the same nominal size may need different guard profiles.

Euro-style half-round gutters have an outward-curled front bead. K&M’s corresponding guard detail uses a different front bend to accommodate that shape. Box gutters also need an opening and support check, especially when the front or back height differs from a standard profile.

  • Identify the profile: K-style, reverse bead, Euro bead, box or custom.
  • Measure the opening: Include the front bead and rear attachment detail in a sketch.
  • Show the roof edge: Photograph the roof overhang, flashing and available clearance.
  • Identify the hangers: Note whether they cross the gutter opening or support it from below.
  • Check the whole run: Include corners, ends, roof valleys and changes in gutter position.

Listed sizes include 5, 6, 7, 7.6, 8 and 10 inches, with custom widths available for review. Check each model’s options, as the available sizes depend on the gutter type chosen. Gutter screens come in 5-foot sections, so remember to account for overlaps, corners, and cutting when estimating quantities.

Materials and Finishes

The current range includes standard painted aluminum, Kynar-finished aluminum and steel, copper, Galvalume Plus and stainless steel. Specialty material requests can be reviewed, but availability varies by model and configuration.

For a screened guard, distinguish the body material from the stainless steel mesh. Specify the base metal, thickness and finish when matching the gutter. Similar color names across different coatings do not guarantee an exact match.

Attachment, Joints and Corners

Plan front and rear attachment for the selected guard and supporting surfaces. K&M recommends securing both edges where the installation detail permits. The installer should determine suitable fasteners and locations for the gutter, fascia and roof assembly.

Lengths are joined with a minimum of a 1/2" overlap, and corners are typically cut, tabbed and secured on site. For screened corners, finish the mesh edge so exposed wires do not create a debris-catching edge. Account for the actual corner angle rather than assuming every miter is square.

Keep the Guard and Drainage Route Clear

Inspect after heavy leaf fall and storms, and adjust cleaning frequency to the surrounding trees and roof conditions. Leaves and needles may collect on the surface even when less debris reaches the gutter itself.

Clear the mesh or solid-cover entry edge and check the gutter outlet and downspout if water backs up. Guards do not correct insufficient drainage capacity or a blockage farther downstream.

Gutter guards help reduce the amount of debris entering the gutters, but they still need occasional inspection and cleaning, as no gutter guard system is completely maintenance-free.

Coordinate the Rest of the Gutter System

Choose the guard together with your gutter profile and hanger arrangement. Include gutter corners, gutter end caps and outlets as the layout requires. Keep access available to outlet strainers and downspout components.

For an unusual profile, send dimensions, a side-view sketch, roof-edge photos, material requirements and total footage. Include corner and end details so we can review the available fabrication options.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions

Gutter Guards: Fit, Installation & Maintenance

Compare screens and solid covers, check compatibility and plan for ongoing access.

What is the difference between a gutter screen and a solid cover?

A screen allows water through mesh and openings in its supporting metal body. A solid cover is shaped to guide water around its edge into the gutter using surface tension. Select the design for the gutter, roof detail and maintenance conditions.

What gutters do K&M guards fit?

Options are offered for K-style, reverse-bead half-round, Euro-bead half-round and suitable box gutters. Confirm the actual opening, front bead, rear support and roof clearance. A nominal gutter size alone does not guarantee fit.

What sizes and lengths are available?

Listed sizes include 5, 6, 7, 7.6, 8 and 10 inches, with custom widths available for review. Screen listings and cover drawings identify 5-foot sections. Check the selected product configuration and allow for overlaps and cutting when calculating quantities.

Why are K-style and half-round guard profiles different?

The gutter openings and front beads differ, even when the nominal size is the same. Euro-bead half-round gutters also have an outward-curled lip that requires the corresponding guard detail. Select by profile and measurements, not width alone.

When should I choose an under-roof screen?

Choose it when the roof edge and gutter position allow the rear extension to fit beneath the roofing as intended. Have the installer review the flashing and roofing detail first. It is not automatically suitable for every shingle, tile, slate or metal roof.

Can I get a sample before ordering?

Yes, we offer free 1 foot samples for our standard fascia mount screens, under-roof screens and solid covers. Review the sample listing and available options, or contact us about the profile you need. Test the fit before ordering a full installation. Available for pickup at our location or shipping - cost of shipping not included.

What mesh is used on the fascia mount and under roof gutter screens?

We use stainless steel micro mesh that has an approximate 0.0075-inch wire and 0.031-inch openings. The mesh is supported by a formed metal body.

Will gutter guards keep out all pine needles and small debris?

Do not assume complete exclusion. Performance depends on the debris shape, guard design and installation. Needles or fine material can collect on the surface or at joints, so inspect and clean the guard as needed.

Do gutter guards eliminate cleaning?

No. Leaves and other material can accumulate on screens and covers. Inspect the surface and water-entry areas, especially after storms and heavy leaf fall. Cleaning frequency depends on the roof, nearby trees and local conditions.

Can a solid cover cause water to overshoot the gutter?

Water can overshoot if the entry path is obstructed or the cover is not suited to the runoff and installation conditions. Check the cover position and remove accumulated debris. Persistent overflow also requires checking the gutter, outlet and downstream drainage.

How are the guards attached?

The front connection depends on the gutter bead and selected guard. Rear support may involve the fascia, suitable hangers or an under-roof detail. K&M recommends securing the front and rear where the installation permits; follow the selected product details and use suitable fasteners.

How are inside and outside corners handled?

Corners are typically cut to the required angle, tabbed and secured on site. For screened guards, finish or fold the mesh at the cut so exposed edges do not catch debris. Include cutting and overlap allowances when planning material.

Are solid-cover end caps the same as gutter end caps?

No. A solid gutter cover end cap finishes the cover, while a gutter end cap closes the trough. Review both parts of the assembly and select the matching profile and material for each.

Are copper screens made entirely from copper?

The body material and mesh are separate specifications. K&M’s copper gutter screen listing identifies stainless steel mesh over the metal backing. Review both when selecting materials for the project.

Can guards be installed on an existing gutter?

Often, provided the profile, supports and roof detail are suitable. Check the gutter condition, alignment and drainage first, then compare measurements or test a sample. A guard will not repair a leaking or poorly draining gutter.

Can I order custom widths or profiles?

Yes, custom requirements can be reviewed. Provide a dimensioned cross-section, roof-edge photos, material and finish requirements, total footage, and corner and end details. Confirm feasibility and lead time before ordering for a project deadline.
