Understanding Your Material Options

Choose the base metal and the surface finish together. A painted metallic color can create a particular look, but it does not change the metal underneath.

Copper

Copper brings a warm metallic appearance to architectural work and changes naturally with exposure. Its bright surface typically darkens through brown tones; green patina may develop later, depending on the environment.

Choose copper when the natural metal and its evolving appearance are part of the design. New and existing copper may look different, and a uniform green finish cannot be promised on a fixed schedule.

Painted and Mill Finish Aluminum

Aluminum is available with a painted finish or an unpainted mill finish. A thickness such as 0.027 inch describes the metal, not the paint system. Thicker sheet options and different coatings may be required for other products or profiles.

When coordinating pieces, specify the material thickness, finish supplier, and color code. Mill finish has an industrial metallic appearance and should not be assumed to look like polished or painted aluminum.

Kynar-Finished Aluminum and Steel

Kynar refers to a resin used in architectural coatings, not a type of metal. PAC-CLAD’s Kynar 500-based 70% PVDF finishes are offered on selected aluminum and steel products for resistance to sun and weather exposure.

Use the relevant color chart to confirm the finish and base metal. A color name alone does not identify the coating, thickness, or product availability.

Galvalume Plus and Galvanized Steel

These are coated steel products, not solid aluminum or zinc. Galvalume has an aluminum-zinc alloy coating; galvanized steel has a zinc coating. Galvalume Plus-type products add a clear surface treatment over the metallic coating.

Specify the exact product and finish required. A clear-treated metallic surface is different from a colored paint finish, even when both products use a steel base.

Freedom Gray and Lead-Coated Copper

Freedom Gray is copper coated with a tin-zinc alloy. Lead-coated copper uses a different coating and is a separate material. Neither should be confused with gray-painted aluminum or steel.

Select by the full material specification, rather than the word “gray.” Review the supplier’s finish information and an available sample when appearance is important.

Zinc and Other Specialty Materials

Architectural zinc develops a protective gray patina through natural weathering. Raw and preweathered surfaces can have different starting appearances. Brass and prepatinated copper offer additional possibilities for distinctive architectural details.

Contact us to review a specialty request. Availability, dimensions, finish, minimum quantities, and lead times need to be confirmed for the particular material.

Stainless Steel

For stainless steel, the alloy and surface finish are important parts of the specification. A smooth mill finish, a brushed finish, and a polished finish can look very different even when the base alloy is the same.

Provide the required alloy, thickness, and finish designation with your inquiry. Do not choose by a photograph alone when matching an existing surface.

Bonderized Steel / Paint Grip

Bonderized steel is often identified as Paint Grip. If you are considering it for a project that will be painted after fabrication, identify the intended finishing process when requesting material.

Confirm surface preparation and coating requirements with the paint supplier. Do not assume that a Paint Grip surface is the same as a factory-applied architectural color finish.

Coordinating Colors Across Your Project

Names such as White, Bronze, Charcoal, and Copper Penny do not identify a universal color standard. Two products with similar names can differ in shade, gloss, texture, or finish. A 0.027-inch aluminum gutter color should not be assumed to match a Kynar-finished roof or flashing color.

  • Compare physical samples where available: View them together in the light and location relevant to your project.
  • Specify the finish: Include the manufacturer, color name and code, base metal, and thickness when ordering coordinated components.
  • Discuss the whole project: Tell us which gutters, downspouts, roofing, flashing, or trim pieces need to coordinate.
  • Allow for existing surfaces: Weathering and aging can affect how a new piece looks beside an older installation.

Using the same specified finish helps with consistency, but matching material and thickness alone does not guarantee an exact visual match. Batch variation, viewing angle, and exposure can still affect appearance.

Understanding Thickness, Gauge and Copper Weight

Metal thickness is not expressed the same way for every material. Use the unit listed for the specific product when comparing options.

Common ways sheet metal is specified
Material Typical notation What it means
Aluminum 0.027, 0.032, or 0.040 inch Decimal thickness in inches. Within the same material, a larger number indicates thicker metal.
Steel and stainless steel 24 gauge or 26 gauge A gauge designation. Within the same gauge system, a lower number generally indicates thicker sheet. Gauge-to-thickness values depend on the material and applicable system.
Architectural copper 16 oz. or 20 oz. Nominal weight per square foot of sheet, not the weight of the finished item. A higher ounce designation indicates heavier, thicker copper.

These examples explain the notation; they are not a list of thicknesses suitable for every product. The appropriate thickness depends on the profile, dimensions, support, attachment, and project specifications. Confirm it for the intended application.

Planning Your Material Order

Before ordering, put the material, finish, dimensions, and quantities together as one specification. For custom fabrication, include a dimensioned sketch or profile drawing and identify any components that must match existing work.

  • Product or application, such as gutters, flashing, roofing, or custom trim.
  • Base metal, thickness or copper weight, and any required alloy.
  • Finish supplier, color name and code, or unpainted surface specification.
  • Required sheet or coil dimensions, fabricated lengths, and quantities.
  • Delivery location, requested schedule, and any matching requirements.

Stocked material does not mean every finished product is ready to ship. Fabrication time may still be needed. Special-order materials or colors may involve minimum quantities, supplier lead times, and additional freight. Confirm the details for your order before scheduling installation.

Frequently Asked Questions FAQs

Materials and Colors: Frequently Asked Questions

Will the colors on my screen match the actual metal?

Not exactly. Screens, display settings, and lighting can change how a color appears. Use online swatches as a reference, and ask about a physical material sample or manufacturer color chip before making a final selection. Sample availability varies by material and supplier.

Do 0.027-inch aluminum colors match Kynar-finished colors?

Not necessarily. Some may look similar, but the finish supplier, coating, shade, and gloss can differ. Compare available samples and specify the complete finish when coordinating products. The same color name, material, or thickness alone does not guarantee an exact match.

What is Kynar, and is it a type of metal?

Kynar is a brand of resin used in coatings, not a base metal. Architectural Kynar-based PVDF finishes can be applied to aluminum or steel. Confirm both the coating and the underlying metal when selecting a product.

Is Copper Penny painted metal the same as copper?

No. Copper Penny is a finish color, while copper is a metal. A copper-colored painted product retains the properties of its underlying aluminum or steel and will not develop a natural copper patina in the same way as bare copper.

Will copper turn green over time?

Copper weathers naturally, typically darkening through brown tones before a green patina may develop. The appearance and timing depend on climate, exposure, and the surrounding environment. A uniform green color or a specific weathering timeline cannot be guaranteed.

Is Freedom Gray the same as lead-coated copper?

No. Freedom Gray is copper with a tin-zinc alloy coating. Lead-coated copper has a different coating. They are separate materials and should be identified by their full names when ordering.

What do 16-ounce and 20-ounce copper mean?

These designations describe the nominal weight of one square foot of copper sheet. They do not describe the total weight of a finished product. Twenty-ounce copper is heavier and thicker than 16-ounce copper.

What thickness should I choose?

The correct thickness depends on the product or profile, dimensions, support, attachment, and project requirements. Check the product specifications or send us the application and a dimensioned drawing for custom work. Thicknesses and gauge numbers should not be compared across different metals without checking their actual dimensions.

Are all colors available for every product?

No. Available colors can vary with the material, thickness, sheet or coil size, and finished product. A color listed in a manufacturer chart does not mean it is stocked by K&M or offered for every item. Confirm the specific combination you need.

Can I request a material or color that is not listed?

Yes. Contact us with the material, thickness, finish or color, dimensions, and quantity. We can review sourcing options, but availability is not guaranteed. Special orders may involve minimum quantities, extra freight, and longer lead times.

Can I get a physical color chart or sample?

Ask us about sample options for your selected material or contact the finish manufacturer. PAC-CLAD provides a color-chart and color-chip request page. Physical charts and chips are not available for every supplier or finish.

Will new material match an existing installation?

An exact match cannot be assumed. Existing metal may have weathered, and the original color, finish, or production batch may differ. Provide the original specification if available and compare a current physical sample with the installed material before ordering.

Does stocked material mean my product is ready to ship?

Not necessarily. The raw material may be stocked while the finished item still needs to be fabricated. Confirm product availability and the estimated preparation and shipping times for your order.

Do you sell tubing?

No. K&M does not sell tubing.

Need Help Narrowing Down the Options?

Send us your product or profile, preferred appearance, dimensions, and quantities. We can help you review material availability and the information needed for your order.
