Custom Metal Cornice for Buildings

Copper, Aluminum, Steel and Specialty Metals — Made to Your Specifications

Architectural Cornice Made for Your Project

A cornice gives a building a distinctive finish at the roofline. From a clean, understated profile to a decorative assembly with dentils, curves, and layered moldings, K&M Sheet Metal custom fabricates cornice metal to suit your building’s proportions and project specifications.

We manufacture cornice for new construction, renovations, and the replication of existing architectural details. Our capabilities include CAD layouts, laser-cut components, CNC forming, custom miters, end caps, radius pieces, and coordinated metal trim. Materials include copper, aluminum, steel, zinc, Freedom Gray, and lead-coated copper, depending on the design and project requirements.

Every cornice profile is made to order. Cornice is quoted individually and is not available to purchase through our online shop. Send us a dimensioned sketch, material requirements, and quantities so we can review your project.

What Is Architectural Metal Cornice?

A cornice is a projecting architectural molding near the top of a wall or building. It creates a visual transition between the facade and roofline, adding depth, shadow, and definition. Metal cornice can echo a traditional ornamental design or create a simpler finish for a contemporary building.

Cornice may be primarily decorative, or it may form part of a roof-edge assembly that helps direct rainwater away from the wall. Some designs incorporate a gutter, but a decorative cornice is not automatically a drainage system. Where water management is part of the design, the cornice needs to be coordinated with the roof, flashing, gutter, and outlets.

Common applications include commercial facades, churches, institutional buildings, historic-style renovations, and homes. The profile’s height and projection can be tailored to complement the scale of the building.

Custom Miters, End Caps and Cornice Transitions

A straight cornice profile is only one part of the job. Corners, terminations, and changes in direction need careful detailing to keep the molding aligned as it wraps around a building. K&M can fabricate inside and outside miters to specified angles, including corners that are not 90 degrees.

  • Inside and outside miters: Corner pieces formed around the selected profile and the angles supplied for your project.
  • End caps and returns: Finished terminations where a cornice run stops or returns toward the wall.
  • Profile transitions: Custom pieces for locations where different cornice shapes or dimensions meet.
  • Radius details: Curved corner pieces reviewed around the required radius, material, and profile.

Depending on the design, components can be supplied as separate pieces or preassembled sections. Prefabrication can reduce cutting and fitting in the field, but accurate site measurements remain essential. Include corner angles, profile dimensions, orientation, and any adjoining conditions with your quote request.

Cornice, Coping, Fluted Columns and Wall Panels

A cornice often looks best when its proportions and finish relate to the other metalwork on the building. K&M can fabricate coordinated coping, cornice, fluted column cladding, and wall panels so these components can be planned together.

Coping caps the top of a parapet, while cornice defines the projecting roofline or facade detail. Column cladding adds vertical detail, and formed wall panels can carry the same material or finish across adjoining surfaces. Each component serves a different purpose, so their connections and transitions deserve as much attention as their appearance.

For coordinated work, provide elevations or reference images together with dimensioned profiles and quantities for each component. Identify which pieces meet, which surfaces will be visible, and any material or color requirements. This helps us review fabrication options for the complete group of requested metal components.

From Simple Profiles to Detailed Cornice Replication

Whether your project calls for a modest folded profile or a layered cornice with decorative dentils, we fabricate to customer-supplied dimensions and specifications. Our process uses CAD layouts, CNC folding brakes, and laser-cut components where appropriate for the design.

We can review existing cornice details for replication, including projects that need to continue a profile or replace damaged sections. Clear photographs are useful for showing appearance, but a dimensioned cross-section or measured sample is needed to define the shape accurately. Include the overall height, projection, individual bends, curves, and connection details.

Dentils are the repeated block-like details often seen beneath a traditional cornice. Their size, spacing, and relationship to corners can be coordinated with the profile. More intricate designs may be fabricated as multiple components rather than a single formed piece.

Lengths up to 20 feet may be available, depending on the material, thickness, and profile. Practical section lengths also depend on handling, transport, installation access, and the project’s joint layout. Contact us to review the appropriate lengths for your design.

Choosing a Material for Your Cornice

The best material depends on the appearance you want, the exposure conditions, the joint design, and your budget. A solderable material can be valuable where the assembly requires soldered watertight seams; a factory-finished material may be a better fit when a specific color is the priority.

Copper

Copper is a traditional choice for decorative architectural metalwork. It develops a natural patina and can be soldered, making it useful for detailed corners and joints where a soldered connection is specified.

Kynar-Finished Aluminum and Steel

For a painted appearance, Kynar-finished aluminum and steel offer durable architectural finishes. These cornices are typically assembled using mechanical connections, with compatible sealants where required by the joint design. Material thickness, finish availability, and the attachment method should be reviewed for the specific profile.

Galvalume and Specialty Metals

Galvalume, zinc, Freedom Gray, and lead-coated copper provide additional options for projects with particular appearance or material requirements. Confirm availability, fabrication suitability, and joining methods with us when requesting a quote.

Material selection is only one part of a successful assembly. The project details also need to address support, attachment, thermal movement, water management, and compatibility with adjoining materials.

Request a Custom Cornice Quote

Every cornice project is priced around its profile, material, quantities, and fabrication requirements. To help us review yours, please include:

  • A dimensioned sketch or profile drawing showing the height, projection, bends, and curves.
  • The requested material, thickness or weight, and finish or color.
  • Total linear footage, quantities, and preferred section lengths.
  • Inside and outside corner angles, end caps, returns, transitions, and dentil details.
  • Photos and measurements of existing cornice if you need a matching profile.
  • Your delivery location and requested project schedule.

Send the specific profiles and quantities you want us to quote. K&M does not provide quantity takeoffs from construction plans. If a detail is still being developed, identify it in your request so we can discuss the fabrication information needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

Are premade or standard cornice profiles available?

No. All K&M cornice profiles are custom made to order. We do not stock premade cornice or offer a standard profile range. The projects shown in our gallery are examples of custom work, not stock items.

Can I order a custom profile or match an existing cornice?

Yes. Send a dimensioned profile drawing and your material and quantity requirements. For an existing cornice, include clear photos and a measured cross-section or sample information so we can review the shape and fabrication requirements.

What is the best material for metal cornice?

The best choice depends on the design, exposure, desired finish, and budget. Copper is a strong option when soldered joints are part of the specification. Kynar-finished aluminum or steel may suit projects that call for a painted finish, using mechanical connections and compatible sealants where the joint design requires them. Contact us to review the options for your profile.

How much does custom cornice metal cost?

Cornice is quoted individually. Pricing depends on the material and thickness, profile dimensions and complexity, total quantity, and details such as miters, end caps, radius pieces, and dentils. Send your specifications and quantities through our contact page to request a quote.

How are the dentil pieces attached?

Dentil pieces may be soldered, riveted, or screwed in place, depending on the material and design. Mechanical attachment can be practical for decorative assemblies. The detailing should allow incidental moisture to drain rather than become trapped, while joints that form part of the weather barrier still need appropriate weatherproofing. The attachment method should follow the project details.

Can metal cornice be installed on a house?

Yes. Cornice can be used on homes as well as commercial and institutional buildings. The profile, projection, material, and attachment details should be selected to suit the scale and construction of the house.

Can you make inside corners, outside corners, and end caps?

Yes. K&M can fabricate inside and outside miters, end caps, returns, and transitions to suit the specified profile. Include accurate corner angles and dimensions with your request. Radius pieces and preassembled components can also be reviewed for your project.

How long can the cornice sections be?

K&M can fabricate some cornice profiles in lengths up to 20 feet. The available length depends on the material, thickness, and profile. Section lengths should also account for shipping, handling, installation access, and the project’s joint and movement requirements.

Does a cornice also work as a gutter?

Only when it is designed to do so. A decorative cornice is not automatically a gutter. If the assembly will collect or carry roof water, it needs a coordinated drainage design, including the gutter or lining, outlets, and connections to the roofing and flashing.

Can I buy cornice through the online shop?

No. Because each cornice project has different dimensions and specifications, we handle cornice through custom quotes. Use our contact page to submit your drawings and requirements.

What information do you need for a quote?

Please provide a dimensioned profile, material and thickness, finish or color, total footage and quantities, preferred section lengths, corner and end details, delivery location, and requested schedule. Include photos and measurements for matching work. K&M does not provide quantity takeoffs from construction plans.

What is the lead time for custom cornice?

Lead time depends on the material, quantity, complexity, and current production schedule. Contact us with your specifications and required date so we can provide an estimate for your project. Allow separately for shipping from our warehouse located in Durhan North Carolina.
