CC100 Series – Multi Flue Chimney Caps

These chimney caps cover the whole chimney, and therefore one or multiple flues. The base of this cap is normally open, typically accepting one or multiple flues, but it can be customized to be completely closed off, except to allow flues (like a chase cover), allowing for maximum protection when needed. These caps come with many designs, including concave panel roofing, hip and ridge, flat roof etc. Available in a plethora of materials.

CC200 Series – Chimney Chase Covers

Chase covers are the most cost effective way to protect a chimney. These can be manufacture completely closed off to be custom cut on site, or K&M can pre cut holes to accept the flues, while also attaching a collar. A vent will be needed to complete installation. Chimney chase covers are a very economical alternative for protecting a chimney.

CC300 Series – Chimney Pots

Chimney pots can be mounted on a chimney, a clay flue or on a chimney cap (usually a chase cover). These items are normally used for their decorative purposes, along with functionality.

Top Mount vs. Side Mount

Top Mount: A top mount chimney cap is ideally used on irregular shape chimneys, those with out of square corners or made out of stones for example. It can also be used when a cap smaller than the chimney itself is desired (which also makes it less costly), or simply if its visually preferred; when the vertical side skirt portion present on side mount caps is not a desired feature.

Side Mount: An outside mount chimney cap features a vertical mounting skirt covering part of the side of the chimney, usually around 3.5". This is the ideal way to mount a chimney cap in most instances, as it covers the whole top of the chimney, protecting it against the weather.
Side mounting is ideal in most situations if possible.

Choosing the Right Material

Chimney Cap Material: Copper, Stainless Steel, Aluminum or Galvalume (Steel)?

Colored Materials: The first thing to consider is whether something in colors is desired. If so, that narrows choices down to either Kynar Aluminum or Kynar Galvalume (steel). Kynar-based PVDF are coatings formulated to resist sun and weather damage.

  • Steel (Galvalume) - Available in colors: Zinc Aluminum coated Steel for higher corrosion resistance, coated with Kynar colors. Comes in the same colors as aluminum with a more rigid substrate, however, it is also heavier. Galvalume materials have self healing properties where cut or scratched.
Since this material is steel based, it is not an ideal choice for coastal (saltwater or brackish water) environments. For those, aluminum is the better choice.
  • Aluminum - Available in colors: Offering the same colors and look as Kynar coated Galvalume steel at a lighter weight. Unlike Galvalume, this can be used in costal environments.
  • Galvalume Plus (Acrylume): Zinc/Aluminum coated steel with an acrylic coating. Galvalume has a similar look to galvanized steel while being vastly more corrosion resistant. Galvalume materials also have self healing properties where cut or scratched.
  • Copper: Our most popular material. Copper does not rust and has antimicrobial properties. It is widely used in any environment. Copper can can be soldered or welded, which makes it a much better choice for now and future repairs. Copper comes with a raw finish that will start to patina immediately once outdoors, turning partly brown the day after the installation and mostly brown within a month. Although there's no precise way to determine due to many factors, copper will typically start to turn green within 25-35 years.
  • Freedom Gray: This copper based material offers all the same advantages as copper with a tin/zinc coating that will develop a mature slate gray patina after around one to three years of weather exposure.
  • Lead Coated Copper: Copper that has been dipped in lead. A traditional material that offers all the same advantages as copper. Because of the lack of solubility, not only lead coated copper prevents most if not all staining, it's environmentally safe.
  • Stainless steel: A trade off between color choices and sturdiness/longevity. While stainless steel withstands the test of time, it is limited to its mill finish (2B finish) look. The stainless steel we typically offer is a 304 alloy (most common). This alloy should not be used in coastal environments. A 316 marine alloy can be offered as a special order material.
  • Zinc: Special order. A traditional look at the cost of a more malleable, lighter material. While easier to work with, zinc is soft, and not always (depending on size and configuration) the best choice for a chimney cap. It can be offered as a special order in either a raw or other finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions Logo

 FAQs

Do all chimneys need a chimney cap?

Not necessarily, but they are recommended in areas with a lot of rain, snow and heavy wind that causes debris to fall into a chimney. Most caps are used for added protection / decorative purposes.

What is the function of a chimney cap?

A chimney cap protects a chimney structure from water, small bugs an animals as well as acting as a decorative item.

What is a chase cover?

A chase cover is the most basic way to protect your chimney. It is basically an upside down pan with a hole and collar to allow for a flue to pass through.

How are chimney caps installed?

There are a few different ways:
The most common and recommended way is to fasten a cap from the side. We call this a side mounted cap. It sits on the top of a chimney and comes down on the sides, normally about 3.5". This is the skirt portion that is used to fasten the chimney cap to the chimney.
Another way is to have a top mounted cap. This does not have a skirt, it only sits on top of a chimney. It is normally attached with construction adhesive or fasteners.
Chimney caps with side tension screws are widely sold. We don't believe in this method as it tends to fail over time and therefore do not offer this option.

What is the best material for a chimney cap / top?

Anything that can be soldered is usually sturdier. Copper, stainless steel, lead coated copper, freedom gray etc.
However, we also make long lasting caps with Kynar aluminum and steel as well as Galvalume plus.

Are chimney caps and spark arrestors the same thing?

Chimney caps are not spark arrestors.

Does K&M make chimney flue caps?

Our chimney caps are not made to be mounted directly to flues. They are manufactured to cover the flues, normally made to fit over the whole chimney (side mount), although as a top mounted version, these can be made with smaller dimensions than the whole chimney, and be mounted to the top of such structure.
Given the intricacy of the designs, our caps cannot be made to be small enough to be mounted on flues directly. We do however offer chimney pots for a more individualized look.

K&M Sheet Metal offers nationwide shipping. We supply custom metal chimney caps to Contractors and Home Owners all over the country, as well as our local North Carolina Market (Raleigh, Charlotte, Durham).
