Downspout Cleanouts & Leaf Protection

Copper downspout cleanouts in corrugated, plain square and round profiles
Match the cleanout to your downspout’s shape, dimensions and material.
Accessible Gutter System Maintenance

Make Leaves and Debris Easier to Reach

A downspout cleanout adds an accessible opening to your gutter drainage system, allowing you to remove collected leaves and debris without taking apart the entire downspout. K&M Sheet Metal offers plain round, plain square and square corrugated cleanouts in a range of metals and finishes.

Installed where it can be reached for maintenance, a cleanout helps you inspect and clear a common debris collection point. It is especially useful before a downspout connects to underground drainage, where a blockage can be harder to access. Regular cleaning is still necessary to keep water moving through the system.

Choose a Cleanout That Matches Your Downspout

The profile matters as much as the nominal size. A smooth rectangular pipe and a corrugated rectangular pipe can have different connection dimensions, even when they share a size description. Check the selected listing and drawing before ordering.

Plain Round Cleanouts

For smooth round downspouts. K&M’s listings include 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-inch round options, with material and finish choices that vary by product. Measure the existing pipe diameter and confirm the connection details.

Plain Square Cleanouts

For smooth square and rectangular downspouts. Listed options include 2 × 3, 3 × 4, 4 × 4, 4 × 5 and 4 × 6 inches on selected products. Measure both sides and check which face will provide access to the door.

Square Corrugated Cleanouts

For rectangular downspouts with a corrugated profile. K&M offers 3 × 4-inch options in selected materials, including copper. Confirm the size and corrugation rather than substituting a plain-square connection.

Need a larger section, round corrugated profile or a transition between different sizes? Send dimensions and photographs so we can review a custom cleanout or adapter.

Measure Before Ordering

Check the Existing Pipe

  • Shape: Round, square or rectangular.
  • Surface: Plain/smooth or corrugated.
  • Dimensions: Diameter for round pipe; width and depth for square or rectangular pipe.
  • Material and finish: Identify the metal and coating you want to match.
  • Available space: Allow for the cleanout body, connection overlap and room to open the access door.

Plan the Connections and Access

K&M cleanouts use tapered connections to help them fit compatible downspouts. Some installations require crimping the downspout end or cleanout outlet. Existing pipe dimensions and seams can differ between manufacturers, so a nominal size alone does not establish a perfect fit.

Locate the cleanout where it can be inspected and emptied, with the door facing an accessible direction. Review the product drawing before cutting the existing downspout. Keep attachment points clear of the door and internal leaf-catching area.

Find product drawings and submittals or browse matching downspout pipe.

Materials and Finishes for Your Gutter System

Cleanout options include copper, painted aluminum and steel, with additional metals available on selected products or by request. Common listings include 0.027-inch painted aluminum, 0.032-inch Kynar-finished aluminum, 24-gauge Kynar-finished steel and copper. Galvalume Plus, zinc, Freedom Gray and other materials can be reviewed for the profile you need.

Specify the base metal, thickness and finish together. Kynar describes a coating resin brand, not a type of metal. Copper develops a natural weathered appearance; copper-colored paint is a different finish. Compare physical samples when coordinating colors, since a shared color name or an online swatch does not guarantee an exact match to existing gutters.

Build Leaf Protection Around Regular Maintenance

A cleanout provides a convenient place to collect and remove debris that reaches the downspout. Gutter guards and outlet strainers can reduce the amount entering the pipe, but they also need attention. No single accessory eliminates gutter and drainage maintenance.

  1. Inspect the cleanout after heavy leaf fall and storms, and adjust the cleaning frequency to suit the trees around your property.
  2. Open the access door and remove collected leaves and debris from the accessible leaf guard and opening.
  3. Check for a clear water path and return the door to its intended operating position.
  4. If water still backs up, check the gutter outlet, elbows and downstream drain. Adding or emptying a cleanout does not remove an existing underground blockage.

Using the door as a diverter: K&M's cleanouts can operate with the door open to divert water. This can discharge water and debris at the opening. This can be helpful if you would like the rainwater runoff to tie into a rain barrel system. Not all the water will be diverted, and some water may still continue down the downspout. Confirm the intended use for your selected model and direct discharge away from the foundation and walking areas.

FAQs
Questions Before You Order

Downspout Cleanout FAQs

Find the right profile, plan accessible connections and understand how cleanouts fit into your gutter maintenance routine.

What does a downspout cleanout do?

A downspout cleanout provides an access opening for removing leaves and debris from the downspout. Models with an internal leaf guard collect debris at a reachable location. The cleanout needs periodic inspection and cleaning; it does not guarantee that the entire drainage system will remain free of blockages.

What size downspout cleanout do I need?

Match the cleanout to the downspout’s profile and measured dimensions. Measure the diameter of round pipe or both sides of square and rectangular pipe, and identify whether it is smooth or corrugated. Check the selected product drawing and connection details before ordering.

Will a cleanout fit downspouts from another manufacturer?

It may, but nominal size alone does not guarantee a fit. Pipe dimensions, seams and corrugations can vary. K&M cleanouts have tapered connections, and some installations require crimping or an adapter. Send measurements and clear photos if you are matching an existing system.

Which cleanout profiles are available?

K&M’s catalog includes plain round, plain square and square corrugated cleanouts. Plain square includes square and rectangular options. For a round corrugated profile, unusual dimensions or a different connection, contact us to review a custom request.

Are custom sizes, lengths and colors available?

K&M can review requests for custom dimensions, longer bodies, adapters and special materials or finishes. Provide the profile, measurements, quantity, material and color requirements. Availability, fabrication details and lead time must be confirmed for the specific request.

Where should a downspout cleanout be installed?

Choose an accessible location with room to open the door and remove debris. A cleanout can be useful before the downspout enters underground drainage. Allow space for the body and connection overlaps, and review the product drawing before cutting the existing pipe.

Do I need crimpers to install a cleanout?

Some installations require crimping the downspout end or the cleanout outlet to make the connections fit. The need depends on the selected cleanout and existing pipe. Check the dimensions and assembly details first; do not assume every product will slip into place without adjustment.

Can the cleanout door be left open?

K&M lists cleanouts that can be used as diverters with the door open. Water and debris may discharge through the opening, so confirm the intended operation for your model and route that discharge away from the building foundation and walking areas. Leaving the door open does not eliminate the need to clean the leaf guard or clear blockages.

How often should I clean a downspout cleanout?

The frequency depends on nearby trees, seasonal leaf fall, storms and the amount of debris entering your gutters. Inspect after heavy leaf fall and storms, then adjust your routine based on how quickly debris collects. Remove buildup before it obstructs the water path.

Do cleanouts replace gutter guards or outlet strainers?

No. These products work at different points in the system. Gutter guards and outlet strainers can reduce debris entering the downspout, while a cleanout gives you access to debris that reaches it. All of these components still require inspection and maintenance.

Will a cleanout prevent underground drain clogs?

A cleanout with a leaf guard can help intercept leaves before they reach underground drainage, provided it is kept clear. Fine debris can still pass through, and blockages can occur elsewhere. A new cleanout will not clear an underground line that is already clogged.

Which material should I choose?

Start with the existing gutter and downspout material, finish and project requirements. Options vary by profile and include copper, painted aluminum and steel, with other metals available on selected products or by request. Confirm the exact material and thickness, and compare samples when a close color match is important.

Why is water overflowing even after I empty the cleanout?

The obstruction may be elsewhere, such as the gutter outlet, an elbow or an underground drain. Check that the cleanout itself has a clear water path and that the downstream drainage is working. Repeated overflow needs an assessment of the system rather than simply leaving the access door open.

Are cleanouts in stock and ready to ship?

Availability depends on the profile, dimensions, material, finish and quantity. Some items require fabrication or special material sourcing. Check the product listing or contact K&M for the estimated preparation time, and allow separately for shipping.
