Gutter Outlets & Drops for K-Style, Half-Round and Box Gutters

Gutter outlet styles including wrap-around, half-round, oval, round and square corrugated fittings
Connect Your Gutter to Your Downspout

Choose the Right Fit at Both Ends

A gutter outlet creates the connection that carries rainwater from the gutter into a downspout or upper elbow. Also called a gutter drop or goose neck, this fitting needs to match both the gutter bottom and the receiving downspout.

K&M Sheet Metal supplies stamped and fabricated outlets for K-style, half-round, box and custom gutters. Choose from round, oval and rectangular connections, curved half-round fittings and decorative copper wrap-around outlets.

Start with the Gutter Bottom

Flat-Flange Outlets

For compatible K-style, box and other flat-bottom gutters. Match the flange footprint and the round, oval or rectangular downspout connection.

Half-Round B-Style Outlets

A curved upper connection follows the half-round trough. Select the outlet diameter together with the specified gutter size.

Copper Wrap-Around Outlets

A visible architectural detail for half-round gutters, with plain or star-stamped options and connections for round downspouts.

Flat-Flange Outlets for K-Style and Box Gutters

A flat flange rests against a flat gutter bottom. The gutter needs sufficient usable space for the outlet opening and its attachment surface; the overall gutter width alone doesn’t determine the fit.

Stamped Rectangular and Oval Drops

Popular choices include a 2 × 3-inch aluminum outlet and a 3 × 4-inch stamped copper outlet. Oval stamped outlets come in both aluminum and copper, with connection shapes designed to fit specific rectangular or round downspouts. Available oval outlets include 2 × 3-inch options for matching plain square, corrugated square of the same size, or 3-inch round pipes, and 3 × 4-inch options for matching plain square, corrugated square of the same size, or 4-inch round pipes.

Fabricated Round and Square Drops

Our custom round outlets are available in 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-inch sizes, with a 1/2-inch flange and 3-inch overall height. These outlets are made slightly smaller than the corresponding downspout to fit into it.

Plain square and corrugated downspout outlets are distinct products. Use plain square outlets only with the corresponding plain square downspout. For a corrugated downspout, choose either a corrugated outlet or an oval outlet that matches the downspout size.

B-Style Outlets for Half-Round Gutters

B-style outlets have a curved top designed to follow a half-round gutter and a round connection for the downspout or elbow. The gutter curvature matters: a flat flange and a curved flange are not interchangeable simply because the lower connections have the same diameter.

This list shows the most commonly ordered options for each gutter size.

  • 3-inch outlet: 5-inch half-round gutter.
  • 4-inch outlet: 6-inch half-round gutter.
  • 5-inch outlet: 7- or 7.6-inch half-round gutter.
  • 6-inch outlet: 8-inch half-round gutter.

These pairings indicate product compatibility, not a drainage capacity calculation. Make sure to verify the chosen material, flange construction, and gutter profile. Other setups might require a different outlet or on-site modification.

Copper Euro-bead gutter with spherical end cap, wrap-around outlet and seamless elbows

Decorative Copper Wrap-Around and Star Drop Outlets

The copper wrap-around outlet offers a unique touch where a half-round gutter meets a round downspout. K&M’s star drop is crafted from 18-ounce copper and comes in 3-, 4-, and 5-inch downspout sizes, with options for a star stamping or without for a plain finish.

Designed for Euro-bead or traditional-bead gutters, wrap-around outlets are often paired with Spherical Quarter Ball End Caps and Seamless Elbows for a timeless European look. Reverse-bead setups may need on-site adjustments. Always check the gutter bead style and size, along with the downspout diameter, before choosing an outlet.

What to Measure Before Ordering

  • Gutter: Profile, nominal size and actual flat-bottom width or half-round curvature.
  • Downspout or upper elbow: Round diameter or rectangular width and depth, plus plain or corrugated construction.
  • Flange and opening: Room for the entire mounting surface and the required cutout.
  • Connection: Available drop length, insertion overlap and clearance to the first elbow.
  • Materials: Gutter and downspout metals, coatings and intended joint method.
  • Quantity and layout: Outlet positions and the receiving drainage arrangement.

A 6-inch gutter does not automatically need a 6-inch outlet. Gutter width and outlet size describe different components. For a replacement, provide photographs and measurements of both the existing opening and the receiving pipe.

Fit and drainage capacity are separate checks. A larger outlet alone does not guarantee that an overflowing gutter will perform correctly. Outlet quantity and placement, roof runoff, gutter layout and the downstream piping all need to be considered together.

Materials, Fabrication and Custom Sizes

Material options vary by outlet style. Stamped oval outlets are offered in copper and aluminum; selected fabricated and B-style products provide additional metal choices. Review the specific product rather than assuming that every outlet comes in every metal or finish.

Fabricated outlets may have notches or tabs around the flange. These allow the metal to be formed into its attachment shape and are common on custom or larger fittings. Stamped outlets use a different forming method.

For an unusual size or profile, send a dimensioned sketch, gutter cross-section, downspout measurements, material requirements and quantity. Include the required drop length and flange details. K&M can review custom fabrication options and preparation time.

Plan the Connection and the Seal

Before cutting the gutter opening, check the placement of the outlet—this is especially important on half-round gutters, as you want the outlet to be vertical once installed. Do a dry fit with a downspout or elbow to ensure the outlet is in the correct position. Make sure the outlet flange sits properly with enough surrounding metal for a secure connection. Don’t assume the nominal downspout size matches the cutout dimension, since stamped B-style outlets are tapered and all outlets are slightly smaller than the actual downspout size.

PRO TIP: Hold the top of the outlet up to the bottom of the gutter and trace the inside profile of the outlet onto the gutter for a snug fit, making minor adjustments as needed.

For aluminum and steel outlets, use matching rivets or zip screws paired with a reliable gutter-joint sealant. Keep in mind that fastening and sealing are separate tasks—rivets alone won’t keep the joint watertight. For copper outlets, K&M suggests soldered connections. We carry all the soldering supplies you’ll need to ensure your gutters last for years.

Keep the flow path clear and inspect the finished assembly for leaks. Have an installer check any damaged gutter material, unusual connections, or changes to the drainage layout before moving forward.

Pair the Outlet with Accessible Debris Protection

A compatible wire strainer sits at the outlet opening and helps intercept leaves before they enter the downspout. K&M’s strainers are intended primarily for round or oval openings; fit depends on the strainer size and outlet shape.

Strainers still need cleaning. Leaves can collect around the basket and restrict drainage, so keep the outlet accessible and inspect it as debris accumulates. A strainer is different from a gutter screen, which covers the trough, or a downspout cleanout, which provides maintenance access farther down the system.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions

Gutter Outlets: Sizing, Fit & Installation

Find the right connection for your gutter profile and downspout system.

What is a gutter outlet?

A gutter outlet is the fitting that connects the gutter trough to a downspout or upper elbow. It is also called a gutter drop or goose neck. Its upper connection must fit the gutter bottom, and its lower connection must fit the receiving pipe.

How do I choose the correct outlet size?

Match the downspout or elbow dimensions and profile, then confirm that the outlet flange fits the gutter bottom. Check the required cutout, drop length and connection overlap. Gutter width alone does not determine the outlet size.

Do K-style gutter outlets fit box gutters?

A flat-flange outlet can suit a box gutter if the bottom is flat and has enough room for the opening and complete flange. Confirm the dimensions and attachment detail rather than relying only on the gutter’s nominal size.

Can a flat-flange outlet be used in a half-round gutter?

A flat flange is intended for a flat gutter bottom. Half-round gutters normally need an outlet with a matching curved connection, such as a B-style outlet, or an appropriate wrap-around design. Select a fitting intended for the actual gutter profile.

What is the advantage of an oval outlet?

Selected oval outlets connect to either rectangular or round downspouts. K&M’s stamped oval listings identify nominal 2 × 3-inch outlets for 3-inch round pipe and nominal 3 × 4-inch outlets for 4-inch round pipe. Verify the fit of the selected product and receiving connection.

Are plain-square and corrugated outlets interchangeable?

Do not assume so. K&M offers separate fabricated outlets for these downspout profiles, and the plain-square outlet listing excludes corrugated downspouts. Match the actual pipe shape and dimensions; compatibility of a particular stamped outlet does not establish compatibility for all fabricated outlets.

What is a B-style gutter outlet?

A B-style outlet has a curved upper connection for a half-round gutter and a round lower connection for a downspout or elbow. Choose both the specified gutter size and outlet diameter, since the top curvature and bottom connection must fit their respective components.

What is a copper star drop outlet?

It is a decorative wrap-around outlet for a half-round gutter and round downspout. K&M’s listing specifies 18-ounce copper, 3-, 4- and 5-inch downspout sizes, and options with or without star stamping. It is designed for Euro-bead or traditional-bead gutters; reverse-bead installations may require modification.

Can I order a custom-size gutter outlet?

Yes. Send the gutter profile, receiving downspout dimensions, required drop length, flange details, material and quantity. Include a dimensioned sketch and photographs for an existing installation. K&M can review the requested size and fabrication options.

Why do some outlets have notched or tabbed flanges?

Fabricated outlets may use notches between tabs so the metal can be formed into an attachment flange. This differs from stamped construction and is common on larger or custom fittings. Follow the attachment and sealing detail for the selected design.

How are gutter outlets attached and sealed?

The method depends on the outlet and gutter materials. Aluminum and steel connections commonly use compatible fasteners and a suitable gutter-joint sealant. K&M recommends soldered copper connections. Dry-fit the parts first and use the specified cutout and joint details; mechanical fastening alone does not provide a watertight seal.

What solder should I use for a copper outlet?

Select solder and flux appropriate to the exact copper product, any coating and the project requirements. Follow the material and solder-system instructions for preparation and application. Do not assume the same solder and flux are suitable for copper, coated copper, zinc and stainless steel.

Will a larger outlet fix an overflowing gutter?

Not necessarily. Overflow can involve debris, the gutter layout, outlet placement or restrictions farther down the system. Check the complete drainage path before changing the outlet. A fit recommendation is not a drainage-capacity rating.

Do I need a strainer in the outlet?

A compatible strainer can help intercept leaves before they enter the downspout. It does not eliminate maintenance: accumulated debris around the basket can restrict flow. Check the outlet shape and strainer size, and keep the fitting accessible for cleaning.

Are gutter outlets and downspout adapters the same?

No. An outlet forms the connection at the gutter. A downspout adapter transitions between specified pipe shapes or sizes elsewhere in the drainage assembly. Choose each component for its intended connection and check dimensions at both ends.

Are all gutter outlets ready to ship?

No. The range includes standard parts and products fabricated to order. Preparation time depends on the selected outlet, material, size and quantity. Confirm availability and estimated preparation time before ordering for a deadline; transit time is separate.
